Composing Those Shots of Your Cats

Everyone understands how much we love our pets and one of the first places we look when we go to someones home that has pets is on the walls for pictures. It’s hard to find a pet owner who doesn’t have pictures of their cat or dog somewhere in their home and to that end it’s a good idea to know a little something about taking pictures of our furry friends and the best ways to get great pictures.

One of the first things that you will need to do is to frame the shot so there are no distractions from the cat that’s to be the subject of the photograph. It won’t do to have a lovely Persian cat overshadowed by a large houseplant right beside it unless the plant is meant to be part of the photo as well. While it’s nice to have a backdrop, you don’t really want anything to take away from the subject of your picture.

It’s also a good idea if you learn how to hold the camera and the best way to get the best angle on the subject. For example, if a cat that is to be the subject of your picture is sitting in front of the landscape that you would like to use, be sure to hold the camera horizontally when you take the picture. On the other hand if the cat is climbing up a tree, you might want to hold the camera vertically so that you get a better dramatic effect.

You can adjust the pictures composition by shifting the camera from side to side or up and down, and the experts suggest that you shouldn’t hesitate to stand on something to get a higher shot or squat down to get a better angle of a cat that is sitting on the floor.

There are a few other helpful hints to make your pictures more interesting and professional looking and one of these is that you should always keep the subject a little off center to make the picture more interesting. As well you should learn to get in close. One of the biggest mistakes of the amateur photographer is that they don’t usually get close enough to the subject and pictures therefore have a distant feel to them.

It’s also preferable if you learn to fill the frame. This means that you should make sure that the most important cat or kitten in the picture is the most dominant object in the frame. You also need to have a lot of patience when taking a picture of your favorite cat. They’re not always interested in sitting still to pose for the shot that you’ve got planned for them. By letting the animal play with one of their favorite toys, you’ll buy yourself some extra time to frame the photograph properly
